Port Already Open or Modem In Use By Another Program

This error means that there is another program currently running that is accessing the serial port or the modem, such as Phone Dialer or Hyperterminal.

Check to see what programs are currently running. Communication programs can place an icon in the system tray (in the same box as the clock in Windows 95/98) or appear as normal on the taskbar. To free up the modem or serial port, it is necessary to close the offending program.

To close programs/icons in the system tray (next to the clock):
  • Right-click on the icon. A pop-up menu should appear. If this doesn't happen then try double clicking with the left mouse button.
  • When the menu appears, select the option that is available to stop the program running. This will usually be something like Exit, Quit, Close, or Stop.
To close programs on the taskbar:
  • Click on the program icon: the program's window should appear.
  • Now click on the close button (the "X") in the top right corner of the window, or choose File, then Exit from the menu bar.
When you have closed the program, try connecting again. If you are still getting the same error message, you will need to contact your supplier or read the manual for help on disabling communication software.

 Error 404 File Not Found

This error occurs when a web page has not been found. It usually happens when the page that you requested has has been moved or deleted. Other reasons could be that the web address you wanted to go to has been mis-typed or is out of date.

One idea when confronted with this problem is to remove the sub-page part of the address and just enter the main site address. For example if this address resulted in a 404 error:

http://www.website.com/subpage.html

then trying just http://www.website.com may provide an alternate route to the page you wish to visit.
